NUTRITION

To keep them motoring

A healthy diet helps children to learn, grow, and gives them the energy they need to get through their day.

Our commitment

At Cedar Grove Childcare Centre, we are committed to promoting healthy eating habits and creating positive mealtime experiences for every child. Nutrition plays a vital role in early childhood development, supporting physical growth, cognitive function, emotional well-being, and overall learning readiness.

Cedar Grove Childcare Centre provides an optional lunch program. Families may choose to enroll their child in the program, which includes a daily in-house prepared lunch at a cost of $100 per month. This fee is separate from and in addition to standard monthly childcare fees.

What we provide

We follow the Canada Food Guide to ensure all meals and snacks meet the nutritional needs of growing children. Our center prepares daily fresh meals for lunch and snacks daily. Meals are thoughtfully planned to introduce children to a variety of foods, tastes, and textures—encouraging curiosity and a healthy relationship with food. To complement each meal, we provide 2% milk during lunchtime.

We understand that some children may have allergies or dietary restrictions, and we are committed to accommodating these needs with care and attention. Families are asked to inform the center of any allergies or food sensitivities.
Children are given the opportunity to ask for more food and are gently encouraged to try new foods without pressure. We never force or trick children into eating. If a child expresses that they are full or not hungry, we respect their decision and trust that they are listening to their body. If a child chooses not to eat during mealtime, they may be offered food again during the next snack period.

Cedar Grove Childcare Centre is a peanut- and nut-free facility. All lunches must be free of peanuts, tree nuts, and any products that may contain nuts.

Family style meals

Mealtimes at Cedar Gove Childcare Centre are approached with care and purpose. We use a family- style dining approach, where educators and children eat together, building a sense of community and connection. Children are encouraged to engage in conversation, share their thoughts, and describe their experiences with the food—while practicing safe and respectful mealtime habits. These moments help foster language development, confidence, and positive peer interaction.

"Sharing meals helps to develop social skills in children. Children learn from behaviour modelled by parents and older siblings. Mealtimes provide an opportunity where children and adolescents can learn to listen and learn how to interact in conversation. The ritual of the shared meal continuously reinforces individual identity: who he/she is, where does he/she belong or what his/her role might be. Qualities such as empathy and understanding can be developed as views and perspectives other than one's own can be discussed.  Importantly, mealtimes make people feel connected to others."
